"Wherever you can cast a line then you can fish" as the saying goes.
That is very true of Achill Island, but there are also known marks that I have tried to detail on this site. If you have any other favourite spots or unlisted marks then please let me know via our Achill Fishing facebook Page and I will add them.
When and where?
Obviously the warmer months usually provide good fishing but it also fills the beaches on Achill with tourists, Sun-worshipers and lycra-clad sports enthusiasts alike. Not being able to get your gear out because the beach is full of families enjoying their yearly vacation can put an end to many an anglers dream holiday. Don't be put off bringing your fishing gear with you though as Achill has many areas that are free of tourists and a pleasure to fish not only during peak season but throughout the colder months too.
You will find links to most of the local known marks (fishing spots) on this page but you are mainly free to fish wherever you like on Achill. However, please be sensible and close gates if you open them whilst crossing private lands and never disturb sheep and cattle etc. Commonsense must prevail though too and always wear decent footwear as rocks are particularly slippery. Also be aware that the sea swell on Achill can be great at times and 2-meter swells are sometimes common. Please also be advised again that most piers and harbours on Achill Island are active and in constant use by local workers, incoming boats and occasionally emergency services. They may appear empty when you arrive but these areas are in constant use so please do not block access with your vehicles, however deserted they might seem.
Sea Angling on Achill Island obviously has its highs and lows, just like the tide! If you are planning a trip then you can now check the Achill tide table and plan your trip to suit your needs. The RNLI has a great detailed site that gives good advice on what to do to prepare on a sea fishing trip, Take a look
